Police all over California reported numerous arrests of drivers suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs over the Independence Day weekend. In Sonoma County, the DUI task force screened more than 900 vehicles at an established checkpoint, which yielded 60 arrests for the three-day period starting on July 3 and ending on July 5.
California law enforcement agencies ordinarily tighten DUI enforcement during holiday periods when high traffic volumes are expected. The next DUI checkpoint campaign is expected during the Labor Day weekend.
Purpose of DUI Checkpoint and Other Campaigns
The Sonoma County checkpoint is aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of driving impaired and for increased enforcement action against impaired drivers on the road. Of the 911 drivers screened at the checkpoint, 37 took field sobriety tests. In other locations in California, law enforcement agencies had a combined count of 60 DUI arrests from July 3 to 5, compared to 45 arrests in the previous year.
The DUI campaign is known “Avoid the 13” which is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety with the approval of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
DUI in California
California has strict DUI laws and DUI enforcement. If you are convicted of DUI you may face jail time of up to 16 months, and a fine of up to $18,000, depending on the circumstances of your case. Offenders may also have to suffer the IID or Interlock Ignition Device which is a piece of equipment that allows a motor vehicle to start only when its driver passes a breath test.
If you are charged with DUI, your defenses could relate to the circumstances surrounding the blood alcohol content sampling and results, and other factors surrounding your apprehension for impaired driving.
It is important that you contact a criminal defense lawyer immediately, one who is experienced in such cases, and avoid making statements to the authorities until your lawyer is present.
