California television fans might be interested to learn that actress Sonja Sohn was arrested on drug charges in North Carolina in the early morning hours of July 21. She was allegedly found to be in possession of cocaine during a traffic stop.
Sohn, who currently appears on “The Chi” on Showtime, was reportedly a passenger in a vehicle pulled over by Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputies near the Washington Baum Bridge in Manteo. During the stop, a police dog apparently signaled that drugs were in the vehicle, prompting deputies to conduct a search. At that point, deputies allegedly located cocaine and drug paraphernalia in her purse.
Sohn was arrested and taken to the Dare County Detention Center for processing. She was charged with felony possession of cocaine, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia before being released on a $1,500 bond. The driver of the vehicle received citations for driving with a suspended license and an expired registration. Sohn has yet to comment on her arrest.
Individuals charged with drug crimes might assume they have few legal options. However, an attorney could carefully review the details of a defendant’s case and work to develop a solid defense to the accusations. For example, if legal counsel discovers that deputies violated a defendant’s constitutional rights during the investigation, the charges could be dismissed. Even if the case moves forward, an attorney could attempt to negotiate a plea deal that significantly reduces the charges and penalties. For instance, first-time offenders may be allowed to complete a drug diversion program or community service instead of going to jail.
